Challenges:
Egypt’s aquaculture sector is one of the largest in Africa and the Middle East, contributing significantly to food security and rural livelihoods. However, the distribution and marketing systems for aquaculture products have long faced challenges, including limited infrastructure, fragmented supply chains, and inadequate post-harvest handling practices.
These inefficiencies led to reduced product quality, inconsistent market prices, and limited access to domestic and export markets. To unlock the sector’s full potential, there was a need for a comprehensive assessment of how aquaculture products move from farm to consumer, and for identifying targeted investments to improve market penetration and value capture.
Solutions:
In collaboration with Megapesca, Arab African Advisers (AAA) supported a study commissioned by the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) to characterize and improve the distribution of aquaculture products in Egypt.
AAA’s contributions included:
The study also assessed export market potential and identified specific opportunities for investment in distribution infrastructure to enhance efficiency and profitability.
Impact:
The project provided the aquaculture industry and policymakers with a clear, evidence-based understanding of how fish products move through Egypt’s markets and where improvements could have the greatest impact.
By identifying infrastructure gaps and proposing actionable recommendations, the study supported better market access, higher producer prices, and improved product quality.
AAA’s field research and stakeholder engagement ensured that the findings were grounded in local realities while supporting broader efforts to modernize Egypt’s aquaculture value chain and strengthen its competitiveness both domestically and internationally.
